I can’t tell you how many times I feel “stuck” in a car or in my kitchen, though itching to head out, because I need to hear the end of something Whiting, Bragle or Bryant is playing. I can move comfortably between Ellis and Bryant depending on what the former is discussing and the tune the latter is playing. He is often heard following Gregg Murphy’s Phillies wrap-up as well. This week, in spite of the Phillies schedule that pre-empts his evening programs during baseball season, Ellis will be on the air at 6 p.m. He also does some of the sharpest interviews among the ‘IP staff, joining Glen Macnow, Jody McDonald, and frequent guest Marcus Hayes in that department. His tone is usually calm and open-minded. Or on Earth.Įllis’ approach is always reasoned and reasonable. The difference is he states his point of view like a voice in a dialogue rather than one who delivers pronouncements from heaven or assume expertise beyond that of anyone else on radio. That’s part of his job, as it’s part of mine. Who do they think they are? Rachel Maddow or Joy Reid?Įllis keeps his cool. I get especially annoyed when a host rags a player for a single game, rather than looking at a season or career, or acts as if the management of local sports franchises should listen to his or her maunderings rather than use their own professional judgment. I enjoy WIP, but I often tune out - thank you Melinda Whiting, Meg Bragle, and Greg Bryant at WRTI (90.1 FM) - when the conversation between commentators or treatment of callers becomes childish or overdramatic. His equanimity and unemotional approach to his job is refreshing. Unlike some of his colleagues, he doesn’t treat every game as the only game and doesn’t judge athletes by one performance. More than that, Ellis rarely goes into panic mode. Rob Ellis can hold his ground, but he always manages to remain even-tempered with even the most annoying of callers. Since I often harp about the hysterics and histrionics on WIP Sportsradio (94.1 FM), it’s important to mention a host whose manner and dialogue with callers I appreciate.
